MJRH-MESUR v.1 Mine and Engineering Surveying Honours Major (BSc) (Honours)

The Mine and Engineering Surveying Honours Major (BSc) (Honours) enables students to extend their knowledge in the field of Mine and Engineering Surveying through specialised surveying units, conducting a supervised research project and preparing an honours dissertation.
Graduates of this Major may be eligible for membership to the Geological Society of Australia, the Australian Institute of Geoscientists, the Petroleum Exploration Society of Australia, the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and the International Association of Hydrogeologists.
Honours graduates have demonstrated an ability to work independently, plan and implement a scientific investigation, meet project deadlines, and also communicate information to a professiinal standard. For this reason, many employers of mine and engineering surveyors in mining, petroleum, engineering and related industries have a preference for honours graduates. Some employers will only consider graduates with honours degrees.
Major/Stream Entry and Completion Details
Applicants admitted into Bachelor of Science (Science) an undertaking the Mine and Engineering Surveying Major may be invited to undertake the honours course if their semester-weighted average is more than 70% in at least two of the previous study periods of full-time study. Applicants from other courses or outside Curtin are advised to contact the Department of Spatial Sciences for qualification information.
This Major consists of coursework units in Survey Network Analysis and Design, Land Planning, Survey Law and Ethics, and Spatial Science Research Methodologies. This is followed by the Geoscience Honours Dissertation unit.
Major/Stream Learning Outcomes
A graduate of this course can:
1. understand the scientific principles and concepts of mine and engineering surveying and extend existing practices and methods to mine and engineering surveying research
2. investigate and generate innovative scientific solutions to mine and engineering surveying problems using creative and critical thought
3. evaluate traditional contemporary information and provide new evidence-based interpretations of problems in mine and engineering surveying
4. communicate effectively through the written word and by oral presentation within the ethical and professional framework of mine and engineering surveying
5. select and use appropriate established and emerging technologies to generate, interpret and communicate solutions to complex mine and engineering surveying research questions
6. appreciate the importance of continuous education and training within mine and engineering surveying and take control of their own learning and development
7. appreciate that mine and engineering surveying is an international discipline with varying perspectives; apply international data collection methods and communication according to acceptable international standards while undertaking research
8. understand the global and cultural issues within mine and engineering surveying and how these impact on the practice of the profession
9. be able to work as an independent scientist and within teams either as a professional leader or collaborator using effective problem-solving and decision-making skills
Duration and Availability
This Major is one-year full-time study.
